submersible pumps over 3.7kW are large-capacity water pumps (water pump motors) designed to serve industrial and large-scale agricultural water pumping and fluid handling needs, or applications requiring powerful and continuous pumping capabilities. Unlike low-capacity pump lines, these submersible pumps over 3.7kW usually feature a more durable construction and better corrosion-resistant materials to withstand harsh operating conditions.

Applications of Submersible Pumps Over 3.7kW

  • Urban drainage & wastewater treatment systems: The ideal solution for moving large volumes of wastewater from residential areas and large urban centers to treatment plants. It ensures smooth drainage operations, prevents localized flooding, and protects the living environment.
  • Fire protection & firefighting: Play a pivotal role in supplying high-pressure water for the fire protection systems of high-rise buildings and residential areas. It ensures rapid, timely, and effective fire response capabilities to protect lives and property.
  • Industrial wastewater treatment: Meets the demand for pumping and circulating wastewater from factories and concentrated industrial zones. The equipment ensures high treatment performance and withstands chemical environments or specific production impurities.
  • Construction, mining & hydropower: Provides robust forced pumping capabilities to control water levels in underground structures, mines, or hydropower projects. It helps prevent flooding, ensures absolute safety, and maintains construction progress in all weather conditions.
  • Irrigation & high-tech agriculture: Supplies massive water flow for irrigation across large-scale fields and industrial farms. This solution helps optimize irrigation systems, save labor, and enhance sustainable crop productivity.

Characteristics of Submersible Pumps Over 3.7kW

  • 3-phase electricity usage and self-water cooling: Operates on 380V/660V electricity to ensure strong pulling force, with the motor fully submerged in liquid for self-cooling.
  • High-strength material construction: Cast iron or thick stainless steel casing, equipped with dual mechanical seals immersed in an oil chamber to thoroughly prevent water from seeping into the motor.
  • Large flow rate, high head, and good debris handling: Delivers flow rates from tens to hundreds of m3/h, integrating special impeller designs (cutter blades, sludge agitators) to prevent clogging.
  • Equipped with safety protection systems: Features thermal sensors and water leakage sensors, and must be operated via an electrical control panel (with Star-Delta starting, inverter, or soft starter).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do submersible pumps require an electrical control panel with phase loss protection and Star-Delta/Inverter starting during operation?

Because at high capacities, direct starting will cause a sudden grid voltage drop and high starting current surges, causing mechanical shock that damages the seal/impeller. The Star-Delta circuit or Inverter helps the machine start more smoothly. At the same time, if a 1-phase power loss occurs without a timely disconnecting protection relay, the submersible motor winding will overheat and burn out in just a few minutes.

How to know if water has seeped into the lubricating oil chamber of the mechanical seal in large-capacity submersible pumps before the motor burns out?

High-end submersible pumps are usually equipped with moisture/leakage sensors located in the oil chamber. When water penetrates through the outer seal into the oil chamber, the sensor sends a signal to the protection relay in the control panel to shut down the machine and trigger an alarm. If checking manually during maintenance, you just need to slightly loosen the oil drain screw: if the discharged oil is milky white, it means the seal is damaged and water has entered.

Can high-capacity submersible pumps be test-run above ground for a short period?

Absolutely not for more than 1 – 2 minutes. Large-capacity submersible pumps do not use cooling fans; instead, they are cooled by the surrounding water encasing the pump body. When running dry above ground, the motor and mechanical seal will accumulate heat extremely quickly; the dry, friction-worn seal will crack and break, and the rubber gaskets will warp, leading to the risk of motor burnout and water leakage immediately upon being re-submerged into the pit.
